Christine Combe is but a pseudonym. Under my own name I have written paranormal romance and romantic suspense. After many years of reading JAFF novels and wondering how they could be written without the authors getting sued for copyright infringement, I finally decided to research how it could be done. It was this that led me to learn that all of Jane Austen's works (and those of many other classic authors) were part of the public domain, which -- in layman's terms -- means they are now free to be used by anyone as they see fit (although no one can reprint the text of the originals in their entirety and claim it as their own work).
A first edition copy of S&S. Sadly not mine. |
In the midst of my research, I came across more than one article about Sense and Sensibility which said that Jane had "gotten her own story wrong" -- that it would have made a great deal more sense for Elinor Dashwood to have married Colonel Brandon and not Edward Ferrars! Almost from the moment I read the words, I thought "I could write that story."
So I did.
From that one thought bloomed the ideas which led to my very first JAFF novel, The Correction of Folly. In this version of the story, more than one person's life takes a drastic turn when they make different choices than they did in the original.
But not only did I conceive of this novel, there are several others tumbling about in my mind, and I mean to mix up many more of Austen's couples in the next few years! I have a series planned which I have called What Might Have Been. Will there be other variations outside the series? Oh yes -- the plot bunnies are already breeding.
